The USA Cricket Association is believed to be planning to issue Requests For Proposals for the creation of a professional Twenty20 competition featuring world’s leading players.
The move could take place this week.
USACA Chief Executive Don Lockerbie has already received a number of informal approaches from credible organisations including a major Asian broadcaster, sports marketing companies and the Indian cricket federation (BCCI) and Indian Premier League, which has never ruled out expanding its interests.
While there is no suggestion that cricket will rival baseball and other indigenous American sports, the US is the world’s second-biggest pay-television market for cricket and is the second-biggest source of traffic for cricket web sites.
Given the interest among the huge ex–patriot communities – both from the Caribbean and Indian sub-continent – it is felt that there would be little difficulty filling grounds for a series of matches intended for an international TV audience.
