Scottish-contractor Barr Construction has won the £58 million contract to build the basketball arena to rent to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) for the 2012 London Olympics.

Scottish-contractor Barr Construction has won the £58 million contract to build the basketball arena to rent to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) for the 2012 London Olympics.

The £58 million contract value covers the construction cost of the arena and dismantling it. A permanent building specification would have cost nearly £120 million.

The deal, which was announced yesterday by the ODA, means the Barr will build and own the 12,000-seat stadium with the ODA paying a rental fee for duration of the Games.

“This contract is yet another excellent example of how the benefits of the Games are spreading way beyond London,” said Olympics minister Tessa Jowell. “Just as Scottish athletes like Chris Hoy are a key part of Team GB, Scottish businesses like Barr Construction are playing a key role in building the Olympic Park.”

Jack Perry, chief executive of Scottish Enterprise, added: “This is great news not only for Barr Construction but for Scotland in general, especially in the current economic climate. Securing a major contact of this size is impressive and Barr are to be congratulated on their success.”

Detailed designs for the temporary structure will be finalised in October with construction work in early 2010.
