Yahoo fantasy sports lawsuit settled

The Yahoo website has settled a lawsuit it took out against the NFL Players Association.

Yahoo, the second-most-used internet search engine in the USA, was seeking to block the organisation from controlling players’ names, pictures and voices on the Yahoo fantasy football game.

The complaint was filed last month in a federal court in Minneapolis. It claimed that the NFL Players Association threatened to sue if Yahoo failed to pay royalties for using publicly available biographical information and sought an order preventing the players from controlling their likenesses.

The NFL Players Association granted National Football League Players Inc. the exclusive worldwide rights to license players’ biographical information. In previous seasons Yahoo had licensed the information from NFL Players Inc., however following an agreement that expired in March, Yahoo claimed it no longer needed such authorisation.

A settlement has been reached however and Andrew Feffer, the Players Association’s chief operating officer, told Bloomberg that the association and Yahoo will “continue to explore additional opportunities to work together.”
