Secondary ticketing company viagogo announced yesterday that if Andy Murray wins Wimbledon, tennis fans who bought Wimbledon Men’s Final tickets on viagogo will receive a 100 per cent refund.
Demand for tickets for last year’s final was so high that a single ticket was selling from £1,500 to £8,000 on the secondary market.
“73 years is a long time to wait to see a male British Wimbledon champion,” said Eric Baker, CEO of viagogo. “We really hope that this is Murray’s year both for him and for British tennis fans. Murray-mania is set to be bigger than ever this summer and we want to give spectators an extra reason to celebrate if he goes all the way.”
viagogo has seen a 300 per cent increase in ticket sales for this year’s championship. It is believed that because of the absence of reigning champion Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray resultantly being tipped as the most likely player to take on Roger Federer, ticket prices are ensured to be higher.
If Murray wins, viagogo expects to pay out in the region of £1 million in refunded ticket costs.
