German professional football has registered an increase in attendance for the eight successive time, according to the DFL.

During the 2008-09 season, 17,580,821 supporters attended Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 matches, the greatest number in the history of German professional football.

“We are proud to register that German professional football attracts the highest spectator figures across the globe,” said Christian Müller, DFL chief financial officer.

“Obviously, a balanced and exciting Bundesliga is at the heart of our success. If you add state-of-the-art, safe stadiums and the lowest admission prices of all European top leagues, you begin to know just what is keeping fans happy.”

Each of the 306 Bundesliga fixtures was attended by an average of 41,904 fans compared to 38,975 the previous season. The average ticket price was €20.79, the lowest across all the major European top leagues.
