Reuters reports that the audit office said the 1 billion yuan profit was more than double the most recent estimate of a 410 million yuan. Athens made a profit of around £95 million.

However Reuters reports that such projects incur bills for building stadiums and infrastructure that can take years to pay off.

Beijing’s operating revenues were 20.5 billion yuan. Expenses were 19.3 billion yuan. Broadcasting, accommodation, transport and medical services cost 5 billion yuan, and the opening and closing ceremonies cost 831 million yuan.
