The organizers of the 2010 Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales will showcase new standards in the sustainability of golf events, according to organizers.
A partnership between Ryder Cup Europe, The Celtic Manor Resort, and the Golf Environment Organisation has resulted in an action plan designed to make the event as sustainable as possible. It involves developing The Celtic Manor Resort’s existing environmental management programme; demanding sustainable targets from providers of energy, transport, catering, waste services and temporary structures; a PR campaign; and the creation of a ‘Sustainable Golf Events Toolkit’ to help future golf events learn from the Celtic Manor’s experience.
Edward Kitson, Ryder Cup Match Director, said, “We are working to reduce resource consumption through our procurement work, and also utilising the event’s profile to raise awareness of what can be achieved in golf facility and event management.
“We are very impressed so far by the willingness of prospective contractors and suppliers to help make this happen, and we believe we will have some highly innovative and ground-breaking examples of sustainability to present in October 2010.”
