The chairman of the Football Federation Australia, Frank Lowy, has said Australia’s chances of hosting either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup are better than 50-50.
Bloomberg reports that Lowy told the National Press Club in Canberra: “It is not a reckless gamble. The prize is too big not to go for it. And we have a better than even chance.”
However he also said “significant investment” would be needed in new and existing stadiums to meet Fifa’s demands of a World Cup host.
The FFA said that staging the World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup a year earlier would boost Australia’s economy by AU$5.3 billion and create about 74,000 jobs, according to estimates by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
