William Mayer, co-founder of middle market private equity group Park Avenue Equity Partners, has agreed to buy the New York franchise of the upstart United Football League.

The four-team American Football league will start in October. The season will consist of mostly Thursday night games and culminate with a championship Thanksgiving weekend in Las Vegas.

“Affordable and accessible entertainment is paramount in today’s economic climate, and this is what the UFL is offering,” Mayer said in a statement.

The league said in a news release that negotiations are ongoing for a New York stadium for Mayer’s franchise.

The league was founded by Wall Street investor Bill Hambrecht and Tim Armstrong, a former senior executive at Google and CEO of AOL.
