Landon Donovan and Mia Hamm, two of the top US national football team players, have joined the US bid committee for the World Cup 2018 or 2022.
Donovan is the all-time top scorer for the US, and twice winner of the US Soccer Athlete of the Year award. Hamm is a two-time World Cup champion, and two-time Olympic gold medallist, who retired from football in 2004.
“I was too young to play in the World Cup this country hosted in 1994, but all of us playing in MLS know it was the success of that event that laid the foundation for our league,” said Donovan. “I look forward to doing whatever I can to help bring the World Cup back to the United States.”
Hamm said, “As someone who has played in two Women’s World Cups on American soil – one of which we had the extreme satisfaction of winning in front of a home crowd – I know just how great a host this country can be for international soccer at its highest level of competition.”
The USA Bid Committee also includes former US Secretary of State Henry A Kissinger, and, in a press release, said ti would be adding “national leaders from the sectors of sports, entertainment, government and business” in the coming months.
