The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced support for the creation of a Twenty20 cricket competition in the US to compete against the new American Premier League.

The American Premier League (APL), also a Twenty20 competition, is being launched this October by the American Sports and Entertainment and is not sanctioned by the ICC. It hopes to use top players signed by the also unauthorised Twenty20 competition, the Indian Cricket League.

ICC principal advisor Inderjit Bindra told the Cricinfo website, “regulation is not the only way to curb unapproved ventures. You need to have a successful alternative, like how the BCCI (Indian cricket federation) developed its Premier League (IPL) as a viable model (to counter the ICL).”

Bindra will be discussing the creation of an American professional league with USA Cricket Association officials during a meeting in Dubai this month.
