Grandhi Mallikarjun Rao, the billionaire owner of Indian Premier League (IPL)’s Delhi Daredevils, has held talks into buying Liverpool FC according to UK newspaper reports.
The News of the World reported on Sunday that representatives of Rao’s GMR group were guests at Anfield for Liverpool’s 4-4 draw with Arsenal last week.
It is believed talks started by Liverpool’s co-owner Tom Hicks were initially regarding a sponsorship deal however the Bangalore-based GMR group is also interested in branching out into club ownership outside the IPL.
Liverpool co-owners Hicks and Gillett took over the Merseyside club in February 2007 for £218 million and the pair are about to refinance the £350 million loan which enabled them to buy the club.
Rao, 58, made his fortune in the airport and construction industry and recently formed his GMR company to specifically invest in sport. He is worth an estimated £4.2billion.
