FIFA president Sepp Blatter has released a statement expressing his satisfaction at the All-Party Parliamentary Football Group recommending that UK football authorities adopt the 6+5 rule.
Blatter said, “This report represents another important contribution to the ongoing debate as well as a new mark of support towards the cause we are advocating.”
The All-Party Parliamentary Football Group, comprised of Members of the UK Parliament, made the endorsement in a report on the governance of English football. The rule would put an upper limit of five on the number of foreign players allowed to start a match.
Blatter’s explained FIFA’s reasoning for proposing the rule:
“These recommendations are based on the need to protect national teams, promote youth development, safeguard and encourage clubs investing in training domestic talent, restore the competitiveness of competitions, and reach an harmonious development of football world-wide.”
