The Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R&A), host of this year’s The Open golf tournament, is offering £250 to every golf club in Scotland and the North of England towards coach travel to the event. The move comes as corporate bookings for the July event are down by up to 20 per cent, with no bookings at all for premium corporate hospitality.
UK newspaper The Guardian reports that David Hill, director of championships at the R&A, said, “We are very aware of the current economic condition.
“We have a very loyal base of spectators that come to the event every year and we certainly don't want to have spectators who come to the championship who feel they haven’t had reasonable value for money.”
The R&A said their aim was to at least match the 115,000 crowd which attended last time The Open took place there in 1994.
