The Badminton World Federation (BWF), the sport’s ruling body, has given security clearance for the world championships to be staged in India in August.

According to Reuters, Badminton Association of India joint secretary Punnaiah Choudhary said BWF security consultants inspected the venue in the southern city of Hyderabad in February, and have given the clearance after a security report was presented to its executive board last month.

Security in the sub-continent has been called into question following the terrorist attack against the Sri Lanka national cricket team in Pakistan last month. India also underwent an attack by Islamist militants who killed 166 people in a strike on Mumbai last November.

Tennis Australia recently requested that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) switch May’s Asia-Oceania zonal Davis Cup tie scheduled in Chennai out of India over security concerns.

However Hyderabad staged badminton’s India Open last month when former world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat and world number four Pi Hongyan won the men's and women's titles respectively.

The world championships are scheduled to take place between August 10th and 16th.
