The International Baseball Federation announced it is adding a proposal to include women’s baseball to the 2016 Olympics programme. Its original application to have baseball put back onto the Olympics programme was only intended for the men’s discipline.
IBAF president Dr. Harvey W. Schiller said, “There has been a great amount of talk about adding women’s baseball over the past year, but recently the growth of the sport in places where baseball is already popular, as well as the request by new federations to increase the number of young girls playing in baseball, has led us to move ahead and amend our 2016 proposal.”
In a press release, the IBAF said it is creating a committee of sports executives to work specifically on the growth of the women’s discipline around the world, which will include Sandra Monteiro, president of Baseball Portugal, and Andre Lachance of Baseball Canada.
The addendum to the IBAF’s submission for inclusion on the 2016 programme will is expected to be submitted to the IOC before May 1.
