Preliminary results from a survey of Asian sponsors suggest that 53 per cent expect to increase their spending on digital and online marketing in 2009.

This spending increase was a bright spot among otherwise gloomy results in the survey, carried out by Asia Sponsorship News. Asian sponsors are putting the brakes on their sponsorship investments, with 41 per cent saying they have put a hold on new sponsorships, and 25 per cent saying they had cut back on existing programmes.

Two-thirds of rights-holders said they were having difficulty signing new sponsors, and a quarter said current sponsors had talked to them about reducing their commitment.

Revenues from sponsorship rights and events were expected to be hit hardest among the sources of rights-holders commercial revenues. Almost all rights-holders expect total commercial revenue to decrease in 2009.
