Larry Scott will step down as chief executive of the WTA Tour to become commissioner of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Pacific-10 Conference on July 1. The Pacific-10 conference organises sports competition between 10 of the top West-coast US colleges. Scott will help the WTA Tour board select its next chairman and CEO before he leaves. Scott said, “With women’s professional tennis more popular than ever, the Tour in the strongest business position in its history and a fantastic senior management team in place, now is the right time for me to embrace a new challenge consistent with my family and personal goals, and leave room for the next generation of Tour leadership to take on new responsibilities.” In a press release, the WTA Tour said Scott was accredited with engineering “a remarkable turnaround” for the sport, and putting the Tour on its strongest financial footing in history, generating a 500-per-cent increase in sponsorship revenues, a 250-per-cent increase in overall revenues, a 40-per-cent increase in prize money, and $710 million in new stadium investments.
