The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has approved changes to the formats of its top events in a bid to help improve their television coverage.

Finals will be compacted into shorter, three-hour evening sessions in a move particularly aimed at winning back younger viewers. Qualification events will be confined to mornings.

Reuters reports that Bob Hersh, IAAF council member and head of the competition commission, said, “We have had enthusiastic support from broadcasters.

“The object is to make athletics more attractive to live spectators and TV audiences.”

The changes will be introduced in time for the 2010 World Indoor Games in Doha.
