Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak have promised that the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics will meet "the highest international environmental standards".
Mr Putin and Mr Kozak have met with the Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology, Yuri Trutnev, to discuss environmental protection around the Games. Mr Kozak said that the Sochi 2014 organisers’ environmental policies would mean that by the time all venues have been constructed, by 2012, “the environment in the Krasnodar Region will have been significantly enhanced”.
The policies include the creation of regulations to ensure all investors in the Games obey environmental laws. In a press release, the organisers’ said they were “ensuring that environmentally-friendly building materials, renewable energy sources, waste and pollution management and reduction systems are all used in Olympic preparation”, and that it would also ensure efficient usage of water and energy resources.
