USATF has proposed a USA versus Jamaica track and field competition that could see some of the world’s top athletics stars race head-to-head in a home-and-away series of meets in 2009.
USA Track and Field chief executive Doug Logan hand-delivered a letter to North Amercia, Central America, and Caribbean (NACAC) representative Neville ‘Teddy’ McCook formally inviting Jamaica to a team challenge that would feature male and female athletes competing in the 100m, 200m and 400m; 100/110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, long jump; and the 4x100m, 4x400m and sprint medley relays. The competition would consist of two meets, one in the US and the other in Jamaica, with the proposed dates being in May and June.
"It was obvious to everyone that with the rise of your country's great sprinters and hurdlers, a compelling rivalry between Jamaica and the United States had developed," Logan wrote to McCook. "These competitions would offer a means to showcase our phenomenal strengths to the NACAC region and the world, as well as offering each of our nations' fans the chance to see the very best competition track and field has to offer, on home soil."
