Denmark has been appointed as host for UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2011 by UEFA.
“We know that the UEFA European Under-21 Championship is the largest football event within UEFA in 2011. In 2004 there were 53 million TV viewers and 111.000 spectators. Through the bidding phase we have had an exemplary cooperation with the four host cities and together we will set new standards for how a UEFA European Under-21 Championship can be organised in the joy and benefit of all football lovers in Europe,” said Allan Hansen, president of the Danish Football Association.
Lars Lundov, Chief Executive, Sport Event Denmark said: “The awarding pleases Sport Event Denmark very much. It is a great football event for Denmark to host and the UEFA European Under-21 Championship 2011 will contribute to focusing on Denmark as an active and professional sport event nation.
The Danish Football Association has previously hosted European Championships for both women and Under-17 and two UEFA Cup Finals.
In 2009, Denmark will host more than 50 major international sports events, including the IOC Olympic Session and the Olympic Congress, the World Taekwondo Championships, the UEFA Congress, the World Wrestling Championships and the LEN Congress.
The Danish Government appointed 2009 as the Danish Year of Sport. The Year of Sport is part of a national effort to realise a vision of the Danish Government: to place Denmark firmly as one of Europe’s leading hosts of major international sports events and congresses.
