Irish sports minister Martin Cullen is understood to have played a major role in securing the deal which has still be to be officially confirmed. The tournament has not had a main title sponsor since 2002.

The Irish Open, one of the European Tour's oldest events, is scheduled for 14-17 May, 2009. It is believed that the tournament will return to the Mount Juliet course in County Kilkenny.
