UEFA, European football's governing body, agreed deals for the UEFA Champions League rights and UEFA Europa League media rights in Italy and Spain respectively, from 2009-12.
In Italy, public broadcaster Rai acquired a package of rights which include the exclusive free-to-air broadcast of the first choice live match on a Wednesday (including the Final and the UEFA Super Cup) every matchweek. Rai will broadcast these matches on its Rai Uno and Rai Due channels. In addition, the broadcaster will show dedicated highlights programmes on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Under the deal, Sky Italia will show all matches live (including the Final) in full across its various channels as well as a complete range of match action on its “Diretta Goal” channel, and highlights on both nights.
Each broadcaster will also exploit the rights on the Internet via www.rai.it and www.skytv.it respectively, as well as on mobile.
In Spain, free-to-air commercial broadcaster,Telecinco secured a package of rights for the UEFA Europa League, which include the exclusive broadcast of the first choice live match (including the final and the UEFA Super Cup) every matchweek as well as a dedicated weekly highlights programme featuring the best of the action from the competition.
Canal Satelite Digital won the rights to broadcast the remaining live matches as well as a highlights programme every matchweek and delayed match coverage. These rights will be exploited across Digital+ various pay channels.
In addition, each broadcaster will exploit the rights on the Internet on www.telecinco.es and www.plus.es.
