Geneva may still bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games despite opposition from Switzerland's National Olympic Committee, the Associated Press reports.
According to the Press, city officials said they would open a national debate on whether Switzerland should bid for the 2018 Games to generate public support.
Marco Torriani, President of Geneva 2018, told reporters that the Olympics represented a unique opportunity for the country. However, Swiss Olympic Committee President Joerg Schild said that hosting the Games would not boost the country's well-developed winter tourism market.
According to the Associated Press, Schild said that Switzerland's federal political system makes it difficult to generate national support for a sports project that would largely benefit one region.
