BBC acquires UKA rights

UK free-to-air broadcaster, the BBC agreed a six-year deal with UK Athletics (UKA) to remain as host broadcaster for its major indoor and outdoor events until December 2014.

UK free-to-air broadcaster, the BBC agreed a six-year deal with UK Athletics (UKA) to remain as host broadcaster for its major indoor and outdoor events until December 2014.

Under the deal, the BBC, which has televised the sport since the formation of UKA as athletics' governing body in 1999, will provide live coverage for the UKA's Major Events Series. Next year's programme of live UKA events on the BBC starts with the Aviva International match in Glasgow on 31 January and finishes with the British Grand Prix in Gateshead on Bank Holiday Monday, 31 August.

UKA chief executive Niels de Vos said: "The extension of our broadcast deal with the BBC is a massive boost. "It underlines their commitment to the premier Olympic and Paralympic sport."

The announcement comes two days after UK Sport announced a £1.4 million cut for UKA as part of its revised funding programme for the 2012 Olympics.
