Seven cities have expressed their interest in hosting the 2013 World Swimming Championships, according to FINA, the sport’s world governing body.

FINA reports that Hong Kong, Dubai, Madrid, Belgrade, Hamburg, Budapest and Moscow have all said that they are interested in hosting the Championships. The deadline for presenting a formal bid is March 2 next year with a decision taken during the next world championships in Rome in July.

Con Conway, a member of the Hong Kong Sports Federation and Olympic Committee, told local media: "If Hong Kong is to be Asia's sports events capital, which we are all in favour of, then we need to host world championships like these. We are delighted that the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association is bidding for the event and we would hope the government will back them all the way."

The 2007 World Championship was held in Melbourne, Australia.
