Tokyo 2016 host lecture as part of education commitment

Tokyo 2016 and the Japan Olympic Academy (JOA) hosted a lecture by Dr.
Gene Sutton, Executive Board Member of the Canadian Olympic Committee
(COC) and head of the Canadian Olympic Academy (COA), to discuss
education related activities in Canada, host country of the Vancouver
2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Under an initiative to promote increased Olympic education in Japan, Dr. Sutton was welcomed at the gathering by Chiharu Igaya, Vice President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), President of the Japan Olympic Academy and a great advocate of Olympic education, together with representatives of Tokyo 2016 and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Dr. Sutton discussed best practices of Olympic education, as well as past achievements and future projects of the Canadian Olympic Academy. There was also a presentation by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government on the city’s sport and Olympic education initiatives, especially those related to Tokyo’s Bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Dr. Sutton said: “I am very impressed with the plans of the city of Tokyo for Olympic education and happy to see that they are not waiting for the host city selection that will take place next year to implement them. Japan is already known for its strong involvement in the Olympic Movement; further expanding its already outstanding Olympic education is only going to strengthen these ties. I wish the best of luck to Tokyo 2016.”
