Olympic bid chief, Mercedes Coghen, said: “It has been an amazing summer of sport for Spanish men’s tennis with Rafael Nadel winning an Olympic gold medal and of course the Wimbledon and French Open titles. Now it is the opportunity for the Spanish women build on their fantastic Olympic silver medal success.

“This year Spain has successfully hosted many major sports events including round three of the World Mountain Biking Championships in Madrid’s Casa de Campo Park, the World Open Waters Swimming Championships in Seville, the Wheelchair World Basketball Championships and the finals of European club basketball championships in Madrid”.

Russia retained the Fed Cup after Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues 57 63 64 at the Club de Campo in Madrid.
