England match draws Setanta’s biggest audience

Irish pay-television broadcaster, Setanta Sports, drew its biggest ever audience on Wednesday with its live coverage of the World Cup qualifying match between England and Croatia peaking at 1.5 million viewers, UK newspaper, The Guardian reports.

The match, which England won 4-1, attracted an average of 1.4 million and a multichannel share of 7.3 per cent between 8pm and 10pm. Audiences peaked t 1.5 million for the 15 minutes from 9.30pm. The rating represented the first time that the sports broadcaster had surpassed the one million viewers mark.

Setanta's unencrypted highlights of the match peaked at 281,000 viewers for the 15 minutes from midnight with an average of 222,000 and a 4.1 per cent share between 11.30pm and 12.30am. The channel decided to show them unencrypted after it failed to come to a deal with a terrestrial broadcaster for the highlights rights.

The channel's full coverage between 6.30pm and 10.45pm pulled in an average of 838,000 viewers and a multichannel share of 4.8 per cent.
