Equestrian adopts new approach

Equestrian is to adopt a similar approach to cricket’s Twenty20 competition in a bid to increase its popularity, the BBC reports.

A traditional eventing competition usually takes place over three days at different venues, but at the Express Eventing International Cup on 30 November, spectators will be able to watch all three disciplines - dressage, show jumping and cross-country - from one seat, for the first time. The new competition is designed to broaden the appeal of the sport and provide a showcase competition for eventing's top riders, which will be helped by a simplified scoring system. There will also be a £100,000 prize for the winner of the Cardiff event.

Olympic bronze medallist, Mary King, said: "We've seen this sort of approach in other sports and it's going to be great for eventing. This is a fantastic way to get new people engaged in the sport and I am really pleased to be taking part".

The inaugural event, the first of what organisers hope will be a series of events around the world, will offer total prize money of £250,000.
