Plans for 5th Welsh rugby region

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), the sport’s governing body in Wales, are actively considering plans to establish a fifth Welsh rugby region, according to the BBC.

WRU boss, Roger Lewis, told the Western Mail: “We are working with north Wales to see if we can put in place a development region. And we have to explore other opportunities in Wales as well”.

Should a fifth region return it is unlikely to be in the south Wales valleys - north Wales are instead favourites to host a team intended as a development side. The introduction of a fifth region, however, would represent a serious financial risk for the Union, which remains heavily in debt.
