IOC approves YOG venue change

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has accepted the proposal by the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee to change the site of the Youth Olympic Village, according to GamesBids.com.

Originally, the village was to be based at the National University of Singapore’s University Town. However, officials said that the global surge in construction activity and costs of building materials meant that the alternative site at the NTU campus would be a more prudent choice.

Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) chairman, Ser Miang Ng, said: “The NTU campus will make an outstanding Games village. SYOGOC will continue to work closely with the IOC to ensure that the YOG participants will have their needs well met in comfortable facilities that will provide a memorable living and learning experience during their stay in Singapore in August 2010”.

The organisers of Singapore 2010 added that the new site would still meet all the requirements of the Youth Olympic Village and would be consistent with the IOC’s instructions to keep the costs of organising the Youth Games at a reasonable level.
