Putin to remain key figure for Sochi 2014

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will remain directly involved in the preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi according to the local organising committee.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, chief executive of the local organising committee told The Associated Press: "He is still the captain of our team. He is aware of all the details and is controlling the project at all levels. It is his personal commitment and personal challenge. We will not let him down."

Putin was instrumental in Sochi securing the 2014 Winter Games when as president, he travelled to Guatemala City to lobby IOC members and make a presentation ahead of the host city vote.

As Russian Prime Minister Putin heads up the government council overseeing the Games and his personal, continued involvement was clear last week as he called publicly for the Sochi 2014 bobsled and luge venue and the Olympic village in the mountain to be moved because of environmental concerns.

"In determining priorities - money or ecology - we choose ecology," Putin said last week. "If the balance of nature is upset, this could lead to a situation that would be impossible to restore for any money."

Chernyshenko also told AP that Sochi 2014 remains on course to complete the facilities two years ahead of the Olympics with the relocation of the three venues having no impact on the final deadlines. Sochi 2014 will submit the new venue construction plans to the IOC and will make a full report to the IOC Assembly, ahead of the Beijing Games.
