Dr Kono said: “Any contrasting figures are completely at odds with two
independent studies from the Japan Association for Public Opinion Research reported by Kyodo Newswire at 70 per cent and Yomiuri Shimbun’s study at 72 per cent that confirm that more than 90 million people back our Bid. The latest independent study was conducted only a month ago.
“Japanese people are inspired by sport and are absolutely passionate supporters of the Olympic Movement. The Beijing 2008 Games and a series of exciting new national marketing initiatives will see this solid support base for TOKYO 2016 only go up over the coming months.
“Last month we received high marks from the International Olympic Committee in its Applicant City Report and now we are seeing a growing understanding among the people of Tokyo and Japan of how TOKYO 2016 will be at the heart of the greatest urban and envrionmental transformation ever seen.
There is still a long way to go and I am confident the official IOC Survey further down the line will prove that support for the Games at the heart of city life is strong, convincing and passionate."
