St Petersburg to bid for 2020 Olympics

Valentina Matviyenko, Governor of St Petersburg, said in a radio interview that St Petersburg will bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics. St Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city, bid for the 2004 Olympics but failed to be selected as one of the five candidate cities.

"We will bid for the right (to host the Games). This will boost the development of the city," the governor said in an interview with Ekho Moskvy Radio. RIA Novosti reported that she stated that the city every chance to win the Olympics ‘if not in 2020 then certainly by the time of the next (2024) Games.’

The governor’s next plans are to gain the support of the Russian President and the government. She has already entered into discussions with the President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Leonid Tyagachyov.

The Russian city of Sochi has secured the hosting rights to the 2014 Winter Olympics. The summer Olympics has not been held in Russia since the 1980 Moscow Olympics which were marred by the American boycott.
