European broadcasters elect next President and Vice-President

Jean-Paul Philippot, RTBF (Belgium) was elected as the next President of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), succeeding current President, Fritz Pleitgen ARD (Germany), at the end of 2008. The EBU selected Richard Sambrook, BBC (United Kingdom) to be its next Vice President replacing Boris Bergant, RTVLSO (Slovenia).

The decision to elect Mr Philippot was taken in Budapest at the EBU’s General Assembly. Following the election, Mr Philippot said: "It is an honour for me to take on this role. Together with the Vice President and all the Members, I will work to ensure a central role for public service broadcasters across traditional and emerging media.”

The current President, Fritz Pleitgen, welcomed the election of Mr Philippot, and noted that there was still a significant degree of work to be achieved prior to his successor taking office. ”Boris Bergant and I look forward to working with the incoming Presidency to complete the reform process, which began with my Presidency, by the end of the year”.
