Tokyo 2016 has welcomed the unanimous decision of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly to introduce a mandatory cap on emissions within Japan's capital city. The Assembly has committed to a Carbon Dioxide emissions cap that will result in a 2 per cent reduction in emissions by 2020. The businesses that fall within this area are responsible for 40 pe rcent of Tokyo’s Carbon Dioxide emissions.
Dr Ichiro Kono, Chairman and CEO of Tokyo 2016, said: “Japan is renowned for pushing the boundaries of innovation and I am delighted to see that Tokyo has created another world first by introducing a CO2 cap and trading scheme that covers office buildings. Tokyo 2016 has made sustainability and environmental enhancement a priority as we bid to host a truly unique 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the very heart of the magical city of Tokyo. We are dedicated to help reduce carbon emissions and take responsibility for the environment for the benefit of future generations.’
Meanwhile, Chicago 2016 announced a new green initiative in conjunction with the Climate Group. The bid committee will work alongside non-profit organisations and local businesses to identify and then create ‘21st Century Green Urban Spaces’ within the city. The spaces will be located near potential Olympic sites.
“The bid puts a great emphasis on environmental protection as it is on of the three pillars of the Olympic movement, “said Patrick G. Ryan, Chicago 2016 Chairman and CEO. “We are proud, not only of the leadership shown by Mayor Daley and the City of Chicago environmental initiatives such as: the green roofs program but also the contribution from our Chicago 2016 Environmental Advisory Committee, who developed the idea of 21st century green centres,” “The concept of green centres fits perfectly with our venue development plan, a plan that focuses on responsible use of our sports venue and minimal environmental impact.”
