SuperSport score UEFA pay-TV rights

South Africa-based pay-television operator SuperSport has acquired UEFA Champions League and Uefa Cup exclusive pay-television, internet and mobile rights in Sub-Saharan Africa in a three-year deal covering the seasons 2009-10 to 2011-12.

SuperSport will air coverage of the competitions on SuperSport 3, 5, 6, 7 and other SuperSport-branded channels, on its website, and via its mobile portal.

Under the deal, UEFA may also award rights to free-to-air broadcasters in Sub-Saharan Africa for Champions League and UEFA Cup matches, including the two finals. It has already received a number of bids for the free-to-air rights, but has not yet made an award “due to the competitive nature of the bidding”.

In a statement welcoming the new deal, UEFA praised SuperSport’s work in recent years as a broadcast partner.

“We are delighted to announce the renewal of our partnership with SuperSport. In recent years SuperSport have proved to be a superb broadcast partner and have excelled in delivering both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup to audiences across Africa. We look forward with anticipation to continuing our relationship in 2009-12.”
