HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, has become the first Founding Partner of Generations for Peace, a global initiative which runs peace programmes using sport to bring together young people from communities divided by conflict.

Announcing Sheikh Hamdan’s support at the General Association of International Sport Federations’ (GAISF) General Assembly in Athens, Generations for Peace founder and Chairman, HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein said: “(HH Sheikh Hamdan’s) significant investment in our initiative, together with the assistance of His Highness, will support us tremendously in our quest to reach millions of young people in areas of conflict in Arab and Islamic Nations as well as other parts of the world; to help children and youth grow up together in peaceful co-existence infused with the values of peace.”

Generations for Peace held its first training camp in October 2007, in Amman, Jordan. Over 70 youth leaders from seven countries attended, and received ten days of training on the use of sport as a tool for conflict transformation among children and young people. Over 1,000 new trainers and 8,000 young people are now engaged in Generations for Peace programmes developed after the first training camp. Two more training camps will be held in Amman in 2008.
