Belgacom awarded Belgian football rights

Belgacom secured the broadcast rights for the top-tier Belgian football league in a three-year deal worth about €44.7 million per year. The deal covers the 2008-09 to 2010-11 seasons.

The Profliga, the group of Belgian clubs who awarded the rights to Belgacom, the Belgian telecoms operator, had delayed their decision on the award, originally due last month, as it was unsatisfied with the price offered by the telecommunications group. Belgacom is not believed to have increased its offer.

Belgacom will have pay-television match coverage, and will also work with channel partners to distribute free-to-air match coverage. It has chosen VRT as its channel partner in Flanders, and RTBF in French-speaking Wallonia.

Belgacom will also work with a production partner, to be chosen after a launching a call for tenders.
