Peace for sport becomes generations for peace

Jordan’s Peace Through Sport initiative has been re-named Generations For Peace in a move which clearly distinguishes it from similarly titled projects and underscores a fresh global focus.

Speaking at the SportAccord convention in Athens, HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, chairman of Generations For Peace, stressed that despite the change of name, sport remains the key tool in promoting peace and enhancing the lives of young people.

Peace For Sport was launched through a pilot camp in Jordan last year which brought together children from divided communities in a series of sporting activities. The subsequent cascade programme has seen the initiative rolled-out to touch the lives of more than 8,000 children and trainers across 55 projects in Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Lebanon, Palestine and Sri Lanka.

“I have been delighted with the impact that Peace Through Sport has had but decided that, as we grow, we needed a more robust name to better reflect the future benefits that will come from young people growing up infused with the values of peace,” HRH Prince Feisal said.

“Generations For Peace is a phrase which reflects to Jordan’s ambition to strive for long-term peace.”

Two further Generations For Peace camps will be held in Jordan this year, drawing on a range of Olympic and non-Olympic sports.
