American Football’s NFL said it has sold the first 40,000 tickets for its second regular-season match in London in 90 minutes.
The League said that the tickets, for the match between the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints on October 26, were available to randomly selected fans who had registered with online ticket retailer Ticketmaster.
The NFL said it has released another 5,000 tickets for immediate sale due to the high demand. It said that the sales matched the pace at which tickets were sold for the Miami Dolphins-New York Giants match played at Wembley Stadium in London last year. Wembley Stadium, also the venue for this year’s match, has a capacity of over 81,000 for American Football.
The NFL has agreements to play at least one match in the UK for the next three seasons, beginning with this year’s match. It has also declared a desire to organize matches in Germany and France, and is considering resurrecting plans to have a match in China. In 2007, a planned pre-season fixture in China was cancelled.
