Russian businessmen pledge bonuses for Olympic medallists

Leading Russian businessmen have pledged just over £7 million in bonuses to the country's medal winners at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Olympic Fund, backed by 10 of Russia's richest men, including Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich, have promised to distribute 340 million roubles among the country’s gold, silver and bronze medallists.

Fund chairman, Alexander Katushev, said: “We paid out more than 110 million roubles to the medallists of the 2006 Winter Games in Turin. Now the total sum will be around 340 million roubles. We haven't decided yet on the exact amount for each sport".

In addition, the Russian Olympic Committee will also pay approximately £25,000, £15,000 and £10,000 respectively for every gold, silver and bronze medal.
