Rio 2016 Olympics bid backed by South American Olympic Committees

Rio de Janeiro’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games has received the backing of the 15 National Olympic Committees represented by the South American Sports Organisation (ODESUR).

The presidents of the committees signed a proposition in support of the bid at the 21st general meeting of ODESUR on Monday. The umbrella body incorporates the Olympic committees of the Netherlands Antilles, Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay Peru, Surinam, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Secretary General of the Argentine Olympic Committee, Hernan Ferrari, said, “The 2016 bid is a desire of all of us and it expresses the feeling of the whole continent”.

The President of the Olympic Committee of Guiana, M.K. Juman Yassin, said, “From now on our continent will be united to support the Rio 2016 campaign, aiming at fulfilling the collective dream of South American athletes – the Olympic Games in South American”.
