AEG buys De La Hoya stake

American sports and entertainment company AEG has become the second-largest shareholder in Oscar De La Hoya’s boxing promotion company Golden Boy Promotions.
The announcement of AEG’s share purchase was made yesterday by De La Hoya, former boxer and Golden Boy Promotions President, and Tim Leiweke, AEG President and CEO.
De la Hoya said: “Our new partnership will create so many new synergies from jointly promoting events in their arenas worldwide to exploring new ways to develop successful promotions built around our boxing shows taking place in their facilities.”
AEG’s arenas have hosted some of Golden Boy Promotions biggest boxing events including Israel Vazquez vs. Rafael Marquez at The Home Depot Center, March 2007; Vazquez and Marquez’s second rematch at The Home Depot Center, March 2008); and Oscar De La Hoya vs. Steve Forbes held outdoors at The Home Depot Center before a crowd of 27,000, May 2008.
Other business partnerships between De La Hoya and AEG include De La Hoya’s recent acquisition of ownership shares of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo franchise owned by AEG.
