UK-based Japanese F1 team in financial trouble

The survival of the Super Aguri Formula One team is reported to be in doubt after mooted buyers the Magma Group pulled out at the last minute.

The team is struggling with finances and buying spare parts, and may have to rely on support from parent company Honda, which has provided engines and technical assistance since the team’s creation in 2006, if it is to make the next race in Catalunya, Spain.

The team only just made the season’s opening race at the last minute, after plans for Magma’s takeover were revealed, but was forced to miss this week’s tests in Barcelona.

Team boss Aguri Suzuki said: ‘We were banking on Magma's buyout but they turned it down. It feels like being jilted by a lover.

‘Even if we have the money to go to Spain we might not be able to carry on after that. It's impossible to predict what will happen but it could now depend on Honda.’
