IOC to review torch relay strategy

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has rejected reports that it is considering ending the international Olympic torch relay because of concerns over pro-Tibet protests.

IOC president Jacques Rogge told France 3 TV that while some IOC members had spoken publicly about cutting short the international leg of the relay, it had lead to false rumours that the relay could be abandoned.

He said the IOC would discuss the future of the relay's route when it meets in Beijing later this week.

He said: “We will of course analyse the route of the torch since the beginning, from Olympia to Paris. We'll discuss this and we'll see what kinds of conclusions we have to take. We'll make an analysis of what has happened and make the necessary conclusions.”

But senior IOC member, Kevan Gosper, has admitted: “ I’m a firm believer that we had the right template in the first place, that the torch should simply go from Olympia, Greece, to the host country. I would expect that the Olympic committee will review the template.”

The torch is now in San Francisco under tight security.
