Nottingham ATP event scrapped

The build-up to Wimbledon will have a different look from next year, with a new joint men's and women's tournament planned for Eastbourne.

The men's ATP event in Nottingham, which began in 1995, has struggled to attract top players in the past few years and will be discontinued after this year.

From 2009, the men will join the established women's event in Eastbourne as they warm up for the grass season. Eastbourne is the UK's biggest women's tournament, except for Wimbledon.

According to BBC Radio 5 Live tennis correspondent Jonathan Overend, the Lawn Tennis Association is keen to attract "a younger crowd" to Eastbourne.
