London start for 2008 Tour of Britain

The route of the 2008 Tour of Britain has been unveiled, with the race launching in the heart of London with an 80km stage around an 8km circuit.

In contrast to the Tour de France last summer, spectators will have the opportunity to see the riders en masse around the city centre with all the action covered live on a giant screen.

The 8km circuit that the organisers have created along with partners Transport for London will, in future years, form the finale of the whole race as part of a four-year deal.

The 2008 race will finish in Liverpool, the European Capital of culture Liverpool and for the first time, the tour will visit the North East, with stage six running from Darlington to NewcastleGateshead.

Also for the first time, the Tour of Britain will receive daily coverage on free to air TV in 2008 with a one-hour highlights package being broadcast on ITV4 every evening throughout the race.
